CD Reviews

Cobhams' worst ablum
kireviewer | Sunnyvale, Ca United States | 12/20/2001
(2 out of 5 stars)

"This Billy Cobham's first of three albums for GRP records. It has the GRP sound, which doesn't fit Cobham's style. The title "WARNING" is a sales gimmick. This album came out just as CD's were starting to become popular. The warning is that the transients from the high dynamic range of the digital recording could damage your stereo. A lot of the music on this CD is just to exercise the digital sound. The group is just a quartet. It relies on electronic and digital sounds. This combined with the GRP "Sunday Brunch" style of jazz does not mix well. The result is very bland compositions. There is not a single track that is interesting. Even the rework of the excellent composition "Stratus" comes off as boring.I am probably being a little too harsh. But, I always expect so much out of Cobham. He has been a major innovator and has experimented with all kinds of interesting styles. This album is just a major disappointment compared to the rest of his work. The next two GRP CD's get better. But, some of his best work are the earlier albums like Stratus and Crosswinds. His whole catalog is now available on CD."
One Of Cobhams Best!!!

"Don't listen to the purist jazz nay-sayers. They are mostly full of hot air. This is a very powerful futuristic album for cobham. The music on Warning is dynamic and masterful. Just take a listen to the Real Audio tracks provided and you will get a small taste of this excellent offering. If you like this one, you will also like Powerplay, and Picture This. All three are GRP recordings, but they are NOT smooth jazz. Oh yeah, Warning was not a sales gimmick like stated by another reviewer. I blew a speaker out while playing this CD at extremely high levels. I play all of my music loud and have never had a blow out. The warning shouldn't be ignored."
An excellent journey through music and movement
