At last, here was someone who brought all of the musicians into play with varying themes, even during solo parts. No slacking, but total concentration on what is coming next; these are arrangements of the very highest order, arrangements which pose constant challanges to the musicians. Bill Holman demands that good arrangement should tell a story: ?Something organic, an inner logic," an idea which runs consistently from A to Z. The former saxophonist and clarinettist started arranging as a result of nerve demage to his lower lip ? he was simply unable to play his instrument any more. In the 1950s, Bill Holman worked his way up to become one of the elite of jazz-arrangers. His motto: ?my instrument is the orchestra."
