"This Fresh Sounds edition of Bill's music put together the music from the original album "The Fabolous Bill Holman" with some music from his Octet. Looking at the titles I may say it's a nice compilation but if I was you, I'd buy the double cd package from Lonehill instead (title is "The Original Bill Holman Big Band"), which comprehend the complete recordings from Bill's original Big Band (1954/1958). They are three full albums by Bill's Original Orchestra and the same material of the Fresh Sound edition from his Octet. The Lonehill edition (which is by the way the one I own) comprehend the following albums in their full form: "The Fabolous Bill Holman", "In a Jazz Orbit" (already published by V.S.O.P. too ... I own that one too because I did buy it earlier) and "Bill Holman's Great Big Band". The cover is different, is the one from the album "Bill Holman's great Big Band" not this one (but this one is reprinted inside the booklet). The music is truly wonderful West Coast Jazz for Big Band. The charts are exceptional, they swings hard and are a lot of fun, they are true masterpiece in arranging. The soloists couldn't be better, Frank Rosolino, Bill himself, Conte Candoli, Jack Sheldon, Charlie Mariano, Richie Kamuca, Victor Feldman, Jimmy Rowles, just to name a few. They're Killers! The repertoire range from originals to standards reinterpretations. Everything shines in this music, Bill's pen, the charts, the tight band, the soloists, ... everything. A musthave for those like myself, who believe that West Coast Jazz is the most entertaining Jazz ever put out there."
