"Thanks to King Records for putting out this collection (though quite small) of one of Country Music's early stars. Bill Carlisle began his career with the blues, not at all unlike the Delmore Bros and Wayne Raney, but then moved on to more mainstream Country Music (Hillbilly music, at the time). His talent with the guitar is legendary as he was an incredibly fast picker.

Bill's character and songs were very similar to Little Jimmy Dickens, and the two are often compared, although Bill didnt quite reach the heights of Jimmy. This album, a Hall Of Fame Series, provides a short history of Carlisle's career, with such comedic numbers as "Is Zat You Myrtle" and "Knothole". But, there is also "Rainbow at Midnight", perhaps his biggest hit and also recorded by the likes of Ernest Tubb. The recordings here are not the crystal clear, highly dynamic, sounds you hear on today's albums, but they are representative of the time and are worthy of a fine collection. The liner notes (just a scant paragraph on the back of the CD) leave a lot to be desired, but the low price makes it forgivable. Well worth a listen."
