CD Reviews

Glad I got this album.

(4 out of 5 stars)

"This CD contains two albums recorded by Big Maybelle on the Brunswick label back in the early 60's. One album was popular songs: What More Can a Woman Do?; I Can't Give You Anything But Love; Cry; Tortured; Candy; How Deep is the Ocean?; If; Why Was I Born?; I'll Close My Eyes; I Still Care; Everybody's Got a Home But Me; Cold, Cold Heart; and The Price You Have to Pay (Previously unreleased). The second album contained spirituals: Nobody Knows the Trouble I've Seen, Swing Low, Sweet Chariot; Yes Indeed!; Old Time Religion; Every Time I Feel the Spirit; Joshua Fit the Battle of Jerico; When the Saints God Marching In; Do Lord; Down by the Riverside; Dry Bones; He's Got the Whole World in His Hands. With two albums on one CD, the price becomes very reasonable. The first thing I noticed the clean, clear sound and lack of background hiss. Obviously the remastering was done very carefully and thoughtfully. Big Maybelle's voice is slightly frayed, but still packs plenty of punch. The backup arrangements sound a little dated. But overall, if you are a Big Maybelle fan, I would put this CD in the "must have" category. I'm glad I got this CD. I really like it!"
