CD Reviews

NUTONE is not great

"This CD was a bit disappointing. I love listening to Baba chant, but this album bordered on painful to listen to at times. The background music was generally too loud and Bhagavan Das was often drowned out. I blame the studio for this as it should have been fixed in the sound booth. I am going to have to listen to anything this studio puts out before buying from now on. The Krishna Das album Heart Full of Soul was also not mastered well and there is a constant hiss throughout that 2 disc set.

I will keep this because I love Baba's Kirtans so much, but I would not recommend this one to others."

"Bhagavan Das continues to get better. "The Howler at Dawn" shows us Baba at the height of his shakti-stirring power.

There are tracks on this album that even long-term devotees of Bhagavan Das will not have heard before. I caught a recent kirtan of his in NYC a few weeks ago where the new arrangement of "Radhe Shyam" brought everyone to their feet and many of us to tears. The recorded version captures Baba's ability to whirl you into bhaktic ecstasy.

Baba's voice is undiminshed in its strength and clarity. He has acquired a richness and depth that transmits his undying devotion to the Divine. Just listening to him is a form of transmission and initiation.

There is no other singer of kirtan alive who can do what Bhagavan Das does time after time. I urge all fans, devotees, kirtan enthusiasts and anyone else to get this latest work by the Master."
Bhagavan Das' "Howler at Dawn"

"Bhagavan Das is the "elder brother" of the western guru brothers of Neem Karoli Baba. He introduced Ram Dass to Maharaji. What is amazing is that the leading western kirtan wallahs Bhagavan Das, Krishna Das, Jai Uttal and Shyam Das were all devotees of Majaraji in the 60s and 70s. Bhagavan Das' vocals are geniune, heartfelt and moving. I like Bhagavan Das because his chanting is more traditional than many other western kirtan artists with much less occidental musical influence."
