CD Reviews

Wham Bang, The Salty Tang!
Matthew A. Smith | Worcester, MA United States | 03/29/2000
(5 out of 5 stars)

"The Salty Tang is for the people who listen to commercial-rock radio, and are completely sick of it! Betwixt defy boundaries by creating their own mixture of lounge, rock, and classical music and give the listener a much needed breath of fresh air. From the rockin' opening track of Jailbreak 98-99 to the final improvised jam Dead Animals you will feel fulfilled and refreshed after only one listen. Leah Callahans vocals are like a smooth summer breeze atop Gordon Whithers soft cello, and Tom Devaneys twisted jazz guitar lines all riding nicely on Dave Nelson's inventive percussion. So, if you're like me, and can't stand to hear one more commercial rock radio song, pick up the Salty Tang and kick back and get ready for a ride you won't soon forget!"
Unlike any other rock disc you're likely to hear.

"And I mean that in a good way. Although I will admit that vocal/cello/drums/guitar sounds like a potentially messy combination, this disc works as well as it does precisely because of that combination. After a getting-to-know-you listen I found myself reaching for this disc on a daily basis. Very cool. Do yourself a favor."

"Well, this whole music thing has me stumped. No really I mean it. Stop laughing, dammit! Anyway what I want to talk about are these fine fellows (and femme) of _Betwixt_ (Well, not really, but that's the only way Amazon will post this) I've listened to both this album and the thousand screaming damned souls in the insatiable maw of the demon prince abd'kabur-morto, and let me tell you, _The Salty Tang_ is worth every irredemable one of them. Oh, that the blobels would have created an album like this. If the dread overlord Ashker-zho had listened to "Sound of America" then maybe his people wouldn't suffer and writh everyday, crushed by his cruel steel boot. And, I, the feckless court scribe would not be taunted each night by the tiny invisible demons which glare and gibber from the dark corners of my chamber. Strangely, "Marvin Belron's Wedding" was first improvised in 1772 by a time-travelling robot clone of Dexter Gordon for the Vienna marriage of Inge of the Habsburgs,(Not to Marvin Belron, whose name appears in order to protect the current (and past)Austrian royalty from assassination and abduction attempts.) A fantastic piece, all performed by anarcho-trotskyist counterrevolutionaries. The Illuminati mat have also been involved. The revelation of Belgian involvement in the American Revolutionary War (described in coded form in the song Spencer for Hire) is a sure sign that the Bavarians had a hand in the lyrical content. It's like owning your very own copy of Heavy Metal Parking Lot. Oh rapture, I do her the sweet voice of the cello calling me to my despair once more... Purchase this album, mortal. It will be your only defense when the invincible overlord comes to set his boot upon _your_ face."
