Synopsis

Product Description
Soulful vocals, blasting saxes, New Orleans piano, slashing and sliding guitars, organ, accordion and earthy beats all merge on I'm That Way, Beth McKee's tribute to Louisiana songwriter Bobby Charles.Once a member of the New Orleans group Evangeline (MCA), McKee is a deeply moving Southern singer - her twang falls between Bonnie Raitt and Lucinda Williams - and piano player - her driving left hand recalls Professor Longhair. The Big Easy spirit is conspicuous on her latest effort devoted to the songs of Charles who has written such classics as See You Later Alligator and Walking To New Orleans. Beth covers both on I'm That Way and there is absolute joy in some of the lesser known songs too, including the title track, Small Town Talk and I Don't Want to Know. The backing band led by McKee and drummer Juan Perez, features players like Charlie Dechant, who has performed with Hall & Oates for over two decades.

I Can't Stop Listening

(5 out of 5 stars)

"This is my first McKee album, but I guarantee it won't be my last. What a discovery! Her voice is textured and rich, and has a tethered power that she wields effectively to express a full range of emotions from the first track to the last. I know Bobby Charles must be smiling big down Louisiana-way, because McKee pulls you right into the story lines of his lyrics. Great instrumentals, too.

Beth McKee, please please please release another album soon! My faves on this one: 'But I Do,' 'I'm That Way,' and the achingly beautiful 'I Don't See Me.'"
