"In The Broken Fields Where I Lie" is the second solo CD release from renown Bay Area composer/multi-instrumentalist Beth Custer. Her sublime, lyrical mastery of clarinets, as well as works on piano, organ, keyboard, sampler, toy piano is much in evidence here, as is a solid, widely varied collection of her compositions for film, theater, dance, and the concert stage. "In The Broken Fields.." features: -recordings of soundtracks for Club Foot Orchestra -live tracks from Custer's Vinculum Chamber Concerts. Held in the Marin Headlands Art Center during her 1998 residency, these pieces unite traditional and experimental instruments -music from the highly-acclaimed Maverick Strain, a collaboration between the dance/theater group the Joe Goode performance Group, artist Nayland Blake and Custer -film soundtracks, including one for award-winning filmmaker Camera Obscura ("Virtue") -an arrangement of the Ellington classic "Echoes of Harlem" performed by Clarinet Thing featuring Ben Goldberg(John Zorn),Ralph Carney(Tom Waits), Peter Joshef(Earplay), and Sheldon Brown(Omar Sosa) -music from Custer's soundtrack for a contemporary production of Hamlet -music for a collaboration with choreographer/yogi Leigh Evans.
