Synopsis

The cover art's terrible, and this isn't as good an introduction to the Empress of the Blues as is The Collection, but Sings the Blues does contain some quintessential Bessie Smith: "Dying Gambler's Blues," "Nashville Women's Blues," "Standin' in the Rain Blues," and "Blue Spirit Blues" are all here, as well as the rambunctious (and occasionally startlingly explicit) "Kitchen Man." All told, it's a great value. --Genevieve Williams

CD Reviews

In the beginning, There was Bessie Smith!
Paul Oliverio | Harrisonburg, Virginia, United States | 03/26/2000
(5 out of 5 stars)

"When you hold an ancient treasure up to the light and put a magnifying glass to your ears, you can hear where all the modern wonders wet their chops: at the Fountain of Bessie. Listen to Bessie Smith's Sings The Blues and you are musically at ground zero. It is primitive, prehistoric, and precious, very precious. Listen close and you can hear Billie Holiday, Louie Armstrong, Ella, John Lee Hooker, Bonnie Raitt, Muddy... Everybody who ever laid down a blues track or picked up a harmonicaEvery branch on the Blues Family Tree, in all its colorful foliage, is routed through the roots and all of the roots go through Bessie Smith. I can give ten reasons why what I am saying is true but it would be easier to refer you to the ten tracks on this CD."
