CD Reviews

Great selection of recordings, the sound ain't so good

"I had previously bought the Artie Shaw boxed set from this label and was mightily impressed with the product. If you like Artie Shaw I can highly recommend purchasing it, what a smoking deal. However, the same cannot be said of their efforts with this boxed set of 200 tunes from the King of Swing. The uneven restoration process was done with too heavy a hand, the digital artifacts frequently ride the edge of being totally unacceptable. Muffled bass sounds and tinny high end sounds is too often the result. What a shame that some audio restoration efforts take the approach that any surface noise at all is unacceptable. Removing too much of it degrades the music. This is the case here. The music selection is terrific and is for the most part in chronological order (as was the Artie Shaw boxed set) starting with 1934's Georgia Jubilee and ending with 1939's Peace Brother. What is not included are any of the small group recordings nor his broadcast transcripts, these recordings are with his full orchestra and feature his vocalists including songs with Helen Ward and Mildred Bailey. If audio restoration is not a big deal for you then I would suggest purchasing this boxed set as it covers a lot of material, if you are looking to purchase a Benny Goodman collection in order to be able to hear all of the instruments I would suggest that you look elsewhere, even at this low low price, it simply ain't worth it. The HEP label has some great compilations and their restoration work is outstanding. RCA's The Birth of Swing covers from April 1935 through Nov 1936 and contains 71 recordings."
Great music at a great price!

"This 10 CD set is a tremendous value with 200 tunes by the great Benny Goodman.

The CDs are in cardboard sleeves instead of jewel cases and there are no liner notes.

But with all the music and the great price and the excellent sound, who cares?

Great Deal

"With this box and the RCA complete small groups box we finally have all the BG RCA releases at our disposal. The sound is fine. Since RCA doesn't seem to be putting out any complete box set of BG this is the next best thing. BG solos on all the tracks except for And The Angels Sing, that's all Ziggy Elman on trumpet. The price is exceptional. I hope they get around to releasing the Columbia and Capitol sides as well. If you love BG you'll love this box set."
