CD Reviews

A triumphant return!
misha2707 | 05/12/2010
(4 out of 5 stars)

"Beneath the Sky is back from (The Day the Music Died), and thier return is a triumphant one. In Loving Memory shows musical progression and maturation over the course of a couple of years. This is easily their most well-rounded effort to date.

The clean vocals, of which there are more to go around this time, are very tastefully done. Actually, if I recall, they didn't even use the same vocalist this time. Someone will correct me if I'm wrong. I didn't physically buy this CD, I only downloaded it from iTunes, so I didn't get the booklet that goes with it. Vocally, this album is as diverse as they come. I only wish they used the cookie monster growls a little more often.

Let's face it, I'm not a huge fan of deathcore (and this is a deathcore/metalcore fusion) by any stretch of the imagination, so color me surprised when a special band that can push those intrinsic boundaries comes along. In Loving Memory presents equal balance death and core, while WDDTS was mostly core with death used like a spice.

Another new element In Loving Memory brings to the fold is the more prevalent use of double bass drumming and (a few) blast beats. I like the addition.

The only two complaints I could find with this ablum were the sparse use of the cookie monster growls and that puzzling last song that seems to end abruptly, followed by over five minutes of absolute silence, followed by...snoring? At that point, I kept waiting for the beast to awake, so to speak, and then finally, morose melody erupts from the speakers. I was left wanting more. That was a good album, but I wanted more.

You are not going to buy this album because some people call it deathcore. It isn't your average deathcore album. You may not even buy it because you are a fan of Beneath the Sky, but you are going to buy it, for whatever reason but because this is good music. You may hate most deathcore and you may hate most metalcore, but this music somehow fills the void left from both of those subgenres. That is how you know this is good music. In Loving Memory dreams up 4.4/5 stars."
