Synopsis

Product Description
This second Bell & Cooper album follows Forty Words for Fear;, and is also produced by Don Dixon. Songs range from blues-rock to ballads, with some unexpected detours in between. To some extent a concept album inspired by Cooper's book of poems Postcards from the Interior, this record also offers some danceable rock numbers, a song-elegy for the writer Larry Brown, and one song based on a Haitian Vodou traditional. Featuring Wyn Cooper (spoken word), Madison Smart Bell (guitars and vocals), Don Dixon (bass and so much more), Jim Brock (drums and percussion), Kenny Vaughan (lead guitars). Guest appearances by Bob Bradley, Celia Bell, and Marti Jones. Cover art by Jim Sherraden of Hatch Show Print, Nashville.

Great record -- get it!

(5 out of 5 stars)

"Postcards Out of the Blue by Bell & Cooper is a very powerful, important piece of work. Many recording artists have tried to meld literate, evocative lyrics with emotive, gut level music, but rarely as successfully as this. In every regard that truly matters (songwriting, performance of the material, and production), this recording is an unqualified success.

If I had to pick a couple of cuts to play first time listeners, I'd probably go with "Cut and Run" and "Alcohol Popsicle," although the whole album is well worth your time. And given the stature of the parties involved, it's hardly surprising: Bell & Cooper are both renowned writers (Madison Smart Bell and Wynn Cooper), and producer Don Dixon is equally well-known for his highly acclaimed music career. Likewise, the contributions of the other musicians is first class as well, from guest vocals by Marti Jones to Jim Brock's imaginative percussion (everything from drums to clay pigs). This is a truly outstanding effort and not to be missed.
