Some leading pianists, most recently Emanuel Ax, have become interested in early pianos. Andras Schiff made this recording in 1977 when his international career was just beginning. It's only an LP's worth of material (49:00), most of it not very significant Beethoven. But it does give us a chance to hear Beethoven's own Broadwood piano played by a (young) master pianist, and that is probably worth the price of admission. Schiff does play very well, and he sounds thoroughly at home with the cranky old instrument. The recording shows no signs of age. --Leslie Gerber
