The three Quartets of Op. 59 form a trilogy. They don't necessarily have to be heard together, but it's nice to have a 2CD set like this where they can be heard together and in order (F, e, C).



From 1806, Op. 59 inaugurates Beethoven's high-Middle period of heroism (cf. the Op. 61 Violin Concerto).



As to Quartet technique, Op. 59 is so dazzlingly virtuosic and innovative that it nearly segues directly into Schönberg's Op. 7 of a century later.



Other fine readings of Op. 59 include of course the Amadeus', Emerson's, and especially the Melos'.
