CD Reviews

Historical recording with thoroughly interpretation
Alfred Rony Situmorang | Jakarta, Indonesia | 08/03/2009
(5 out of 5 stars)

"I found this set in one of the music store at Bandung, Indonesia, and after listening all CDs for a week, I considered this set as the best period instrument recording of Beethoven's Piano Sonatas. Why? FIRST, the sound is very fine and clear for this kind of Walter and Streicher fortepianos. SECOND, in every subtlety of Beethoven markings of his sonata (especially dynamics gradations and subitos), Melvyn could present them very convincingly with such of Beethovenian manner. THIRD, the tempi of all sonatas are very comfortable, it means that every sonata he played has comfortably speed to be listened. On the contrary with this age pianists which they tend to play everything faster, so sometimes the music is gone with virtuosity. As a conclusion, this set is so perfect as historical recording and also musical recording. So, if I found one lack of this set, I think there is one big question for Melvyn, why didn't he record the last six sonatas to make it completely cycle of all 32 Beethoven's?"
