CD Reviews

Excellent playing and absolutely great sound make these cds

"my incompetent opinion: excellent playing and absolutely great sound. i also appreciated that my often unable player (traction belt parasound cdp-2000) was able to play all the cds with no problem - which i imagine means the cds aren't flimsy."
Nifty

"My first reaction when I started listening to this set was, It doesn't sound like Brendel, or, It doesn't sound like Ashkenazy. After a while, I stopped making comparisions and just succumbed to the playing. Kun-Woo Paik is an excellent Beethoven player. He has a broad dynamic range, and his fortes are REALLY loud. He is helped by being recorded at Wyastone Leys, where Nimbus made its piano recordings. The recorded sound is rich, with a lot of depth. Of performances that stood out, the Waldstein is a big canvass, with much beautifully sustained grandeur in the final movement that I have heard nowhere else. The Appassionata is from first note to last a great performance, filled with verve and supreme technique. It's as good in its way as Rudolf Serkin's performance. None of the sonatas is disappointing. The Sonatinas feature some slow tempi that emphasize the classical elegance of these pieces. As a whole, this set offers highly accomplished pianism coupled with true soulfulness, a winning combination when approaching Beethoven. I really can't think of a Beethoven sonata recording I've enjoyed more."
Great performance. Great sound. Hard to beat!

"There are more than dozens of Beethoven piano sonata collections out there but Kun Woo Paiks should rank on top of them. The pieces are accurately played with emotions. He hits the keys soft when they should be soft and he pounds on keys when they should be hard. I very much love "Les Adieux" and "Tempest" by Mr. Paik. I already have Schiff, O'Conor and Gilels sonata repertoires and this is a great addition to my beethoven piano sonata collections."
