CD Reviews

LOOK CAREFULLY
Andre Gauthier | 09/27/2008
(5 out of 5 stars)

"IMPORTANT: This does NOT have Beethoven's 29th piano sonata, the Hammerklavier, on it. Insead it has Op 111, that is the 32nd sonata.

The concerto glistens in every possible way. The sound is superb, although it doesn't really outdo the earlier mono with Van Kempen on the podium. If you love Beethoven, you should have both versions. At least this is cheap. The full stereo set right now is far too expensive.

If you don't have this, you should. It is a lesson in graceful yet strong playing by everyone involved. Leitner is grossly underrated too. The BPO never sounded better than it does here in DGGs early stereo. And they haven't screwed it up in the remastering, so you can't go wrong."
