CD Reviews

Excellent Performance, Mediocre Sound
Ross Kennett | Narooma, NSW Australia | 09/11/2007
(4 out of 5 stars)

"This three CD set of the complete violin and piano sonatas by Beethoven was recorded back in 1956 -57 by Arthur Grumiaux and Clara Haskil. Grumiaux was one of the great violists of the second half of the 20th century, and Haskil was a highly regarded pianist; these names alone are a guarantee of a world class performance. The way in which chamber music of the period is played has changed little over the last 50 years, so there is no need to discus the performance further, it is excellent.

The only question is the sound quality, while a lot of the instrumental music reordings made 20 years or more back have sound that is no longer acceptable, in much of the chamber music the sound is good. For example I have a stack of chamber music of Mozart, Beethoven and Schubert recordings made by Grumiaux, Beau Arts Trio etc in which the sound is very acceptable. In these three CDs, made about 10 years earlier the sound is not as good, I am afraid that it does detract a little from the enjoyment you will get listening to the sonatas. The backgrond rumble that was standard back then has been removed, perhaps this removeable has altered the tone of the violin.

Are these CDs worth buying ? Yes, I think so, you get all the sonatas at a super bargain price and an excellent performance, listen to them all and then get a modern CD of your favourite, which will probably be "Spring ".

"Unavailable in this country for years, this set stands among the best and is superior to Grumiax's recordings of these violin sonatas with Claudio Arau. At this price, lovers of these masterpieces are foolish to pass on this gem."
Love the playing, the sound is ok
