This is the world-premiere recording of a 1951 opera by German composer Goldschmidt. Based on a play by Percy Bysshe Shelley, it centers around a late- Renaissance brute who is liked by the papacy (he's a major patron). When his first wife dies, he remarries and is then killed, in turn, by his beautiful daughter from his first marriage. Full of passion and intrigue, Beatrice Cenci is in some ways a throwback to Italian operas of the early 19th century, but it also has strong Mahlerian and Brucknerian flourishes. This is an excellent performance of a topnotch work. --Paul Cook
