CD Reviews

What a fond trip down memory lane!

(5 out of 5 stars)

"I'll admit up front that two of the stars I gave this 2-on-1 CD was simply for all the wonderful memories this release from 1964 conjures up. All Summer Long was only my second LP purchase. [The first was Meet the Beatles earlier in the year when I was all of eleven!]With more than 6,000 titles in my music collection now, I've enjoyed the opportunity to go back and revisit some of these old records on CD and it reminded me of what I loved about these records in the first place. Sure, you still hear the hits on the classic rock stations--and there's plenty of them here: "I Get Around," "Wendy" and "Little Honda" from All Summer Long, as well as "Little Deuce Coupe," "Shut Down," "409" and "Be True to Your School" from Little Deuce Coupe. But there are other gems on this release to savor: the always tight harmony singing on "Hushabye," the goofiness of "Drive-In," the heartache of "We'll Run Away," the hard-driving "Don't Back Down." Okay, "Our Favorite Recording Sessions" is tough to listen to more than once or twice, especially since it sounds a little too scripted. The bottom line is this: This disc finds its way into my CD player more often than any of the five discs from the Beach Boys box set. Okay, let's set the way-back machine to 1964. Ready? "Round, round, get around, I get around, yeah, get around, oo-ooh, I get around..." (Enjoy!)"
