CD Reviews

Pleasantly Surprised

"Having not much time for them,Bowie,Iggy did it a lot better a long time ago plus the band's name dripped with pretension, and their first album in 25 years-why would you bother? Well, something about the album cover made me curious-and a lack of details inside made me wonder lets give it a spin. From the opening track Too much 21st Century to the end it chugged along very well. Peter Murphy's deep baritone is quite compelling and the band behind him just crackles. The production of the album makes the band contemporary but of another vintage. You can here their influences but then you can also here who they have influenced. If its a one off reunion the band has definitely gone off on a high, but if there is more to come the possibilities are endless"
Curiously low-key exit for a legendary band

"If this indeed proves to be Bauhaus's last album, you might say that they didn't go out with a bang, but rather a hiss. Most of the tracks sound like sonic sketches rather than full-blown songs. It's as though Peter and the boys had some intriguing ideas, but didn't have the time or inclination to flesh them out. Having said that, the album sounds suprisingly good for something put together in a rush. In fact, it doesn't sound rushed at all. But it does sound bare, sometimes painfully so. You keep waiting for the song's hook or punch, but it peters out before creating any kind of emotional resonance. One or two songs are exceptional, the rest is just background."

"I know lots of people were expecting "Go Away White" to sound like the 2nd disc of "Burning From The Inside". They forget that in the interim Peter Murphy, Daniel Ash, David J & Kevin Haskins continued to make music, Murphy mostly solo while the rest did both solo and group projects like Tones On Tail & Love And Rockets, and they continued to develop their musical styles, moving past Bauhaus yet always as adventurous. If you're familiar with their works since breaking up in 1983, you'll recognize a further evolution of their styles from all their side projects. In fact, they show that they can meld all their styles to create something new. "Saved" sounds like vintage solo Murphy done Tones On Tail style. "Adrenalin" is a Love And Rockets rocker with Murphy's distinctive vocal touch. Even "The Dog's A Vapour", a holdover from 1998, sounds little like the Bauhaus of old. I think it's great that these guys can create something new and not regurgitate stuff that sounds like they haven't progressed in 25 years. I'm going to miss them, but this album is a great way for them to say goodbye to their fans, while at the same time teasing us about their future projects."
