CD Reviews

What a great sound!!!

"Wow! I had never heard of these guys but this music is awesome!! This is such an original album and put together so professionally. The Lyrics are probing at times, disturbing at times but generally pure poetry.Musically, it is hard to describe these guys, but everything seems to fit together like a glove.. Would LOVE to hear them live to see if the sound is the same... Best album i have listened to in 3 years I think!"
But what will ultimately draw you ...

"BATTERED FISH - Modern (Toupee Records) A trio working with a lighter touch is BATTERED FISH, a Brisbane (Australia) combo who have just put out their fourth release. This album will confound the casual listener with its mix of influences, but what will ultimately draw you in is the oh-so-lazy but seductive vocals of Caleb James. A guy who works off a mix of Ian Curtis's drone and Bono's falsetto, James never overstates his importance. He never comes across as too earnest. If anything he curiously (and almost humorously) approaches the realms of disinterest. It's not likely you'll tire of the band quickly for that reason alone. Plus, what at first seems like an unadventurous album will slowly reveal its strengths as it unfolds with songs such as "Rise", "Amazing Light" and "To the Reverend Love". It's here that the American Music Club comes to mind. Investigate. RICHARD KINGSMILL, ROLLING STONE (Australian Edition), SEP 1998"
