CD Reviews

Full powered metal, no guitar!

"Before you buy this, you'll have to know that this album was composed mainly by the bassists of Helloween, Sodom, Destruction and Rage. So there are songs in the style of each band, this means it has variety, but you might not like some of those bands. Personally I only listen to Helloween out of those 4 bands, but I must admit that even considering so, the CD is quite amazing. There are songs that sound like there's a 4 person band playing but you got only the bassist/singer and the drummer.

I must admit that one of the things I liked the most is how this isn't an instrument based disc, you have some good lyrics (of course some suck as well) and some good singing (again, it can suck from time to time). But overall it's just metal to its full power and AWESOME bass solos, just to prove that the bass is essential and can stand alone in a band as a main melodic instrument. Hope this serves its purpose and will let us listen to more bass solos in bands from now on."
A most unusual metal collaboration

"Bassinvaders is the side project put together by Helloween bassist Marcus Grosskopf, alongside Peavy Wagner (Rage), Marcel Schirmer (Destruction) and Tom Angelripper (Sodom). These noted bassists put together an album - 2008's Hellbassbeaters - that relies exclusively on bass guitar, with no acoustic or electric 6-string action to be found. Solos are provided by high profile guest stars like Billy Sheehan (Mr. Big), Marco Mendoza (Whitesnake), Rudy Sarzo (Quiet Riot), Joey Vera (Anthrax), Dennis Ward (Pink Cream 69), and Nibbs Carter (Saxon), among others. Vocals for this album are provided by Apollo Papathanasio (Time Requiem) and Jesper Binzer (D-A-D), as well as Schirmer, Wagner, and Angelripper.

If you're a bass player, or a huge fan of Grosskopf and/or his 4-string cohorts, you'll want to check out this interesting project. Between the guest solos and innovative "lead guitar" bass work, Hellbassbeaters definitely grabs your attention. Unfortunately, the songs on the album aren't very memorable aside from their obvious novelty factor. I think bringing in some higher profile vocalists might have helped (guys like Jorn Lande and D.C. Cooper would have been great) give the album some replay value to those of us who aren't bass enthusiasts.
