"The Clifford Brown / Max Roach Quartett could do no wrong; all of their works together gave one the impression of a perfect match, each one with so much talent; they enhanced each other. By the time this album was released, it was like they had been together forever, and you could not wait to hear what else they were going to do. Basin Street, in it's relaxed form, brings out the basic quality of the whole group, with Brown & Roach at their best."

Great Music, But Turn It Waay Up...

"The remastered edition of "At Basin Street" is an improvement over the previous cd incarnation, with the instruments sounding clear and crisp. The only trouble is, the recording levels were really low and on my (rather cheap) stereo, I find myself having to crank the volume up about 4 levels higher just to hear the cd at a normal level. It's still a fine album, though. "What Is This Thing Called Love?" and "I'll Remember April" are the standout tunes, with great contributions from drummer Max Roach and Tenor man Sonny Rollins, whose solo break in "April" is the best riff on the entire album. Pianist Richie Powell had great touch and showed great promise. It's so tragic that he and Brownie had to die so young. I'll give the music five stars, but an overrall rating of four because of the recording sounding too quiet."

"This is an all-star cast: max roach, clifford brown, sonny rollins, and surprisingly enough, it is richie powell on the piano whom I appreciate the most. I guess I don't hear much of him, so I find his style fresh. I believe he and Clifford passed away shortly after this in a car accident, which is so sad. This would have been a quintet for the ages had they not met this fate.

This version of the cd has two 'breakdowns', pieces that are interrupted because someone goofed. It does not add much though."
