CD Reviews

Brilliant end to a great career
Peter Durward Harris | Leicester England | 04/18/2004
(5 out of 5 stars)

"This was Barbara's final album of original material. She recorded it knowing that radio stations would ignore it, so there was no pressure to find a big hit. The album is fairly typical; of her style - pop-country music with R+B influences here and there. The token single release was Ten-pound hammer. I don't believe it mattered what was released, as it wasn't going to get airplay. There are several covers here including Get here (Brenda Russell), Your one and only (previously recorded by Brenda Lee, though her version may also be a cover), Just like me (Lee Greenwood) and Have I told you lately (Van Morrison). Some of the others may also be covers judging by the copyright dates on the songs, although it may just be that nobody else recorded them before Barbara did.If I have to pick out highlights, I'll say Heart from a stone (a superb ballad) and Your one and only (a great up-tempo song), but this is a wonderful album with plenty to keep Barbara's fans entertained. While I am sad that Barbara quit the music business, I hope that she is happy, whatever she is doing. This album is one that all her true fans (and there are still plenty of them) will treasure. What a way to go!"
One of Barbara's best albums ever - as well as her last

"This album was the swan song for Barbara Mandrell's recording career...and what a way to go out!!! This album has soooo many great songs, it is a shame that country radio turned up their nose at Barbara's music as well as other veterans such as Kenny Rogers, Loretta Lynn, and even Dolly. Country music today is mostly thinly veiled pop music (with a few exceptions...Toby Keith comes to mind) and is a disgrace to the true country fans!!You won't regret buying this album!!!"
This is a must for any country music fan.

"This is the last full album that Barbara recorded. It was never played on country radio, but it demands the attention of country fans around the world. These songs are some of the best ever. Her soulful remakes of "Get Here" and "Have I Told You Lately" are tremendous! If you are a fan of Barbara Mandrell's or just a fan of country music, you are going to want to make this album part of your music collection!"
