CD Reviews

Can't go wrong with this disc . . .

"Not familiar with Telemann? Most people probably aren't. That's why this disc is so great. It provides an affordable introduction to this Baroque artist's music. Telemann was a prolific composer. Fortunately, much of his work is available on bargain-priced cds (like Naxos or Teldec). This Sony release offers but a taste of his music. But the price is right, and the selections impressive. Although recorded in the early 1970's, this ADD issue really sounds good, and has held up well since first released on vinyl some 30 years ago. That's pretty impressive, and attests to Sony's ability to remaster analog recordings (most reissues on their Classics line sound crisp and clear). This disc introduced me to the works of Telemann, and served as a jumping off point for purchasing more of his work. If you don't own this disc, or don't know much about Telemann, I highly recommend this disc for starters. It's inexpensive, full of great music, and features some wonderful performances."
Deliciously Romantic Baroque

"This compilation of Telemann's music by two St. Petersburg chamber orchestras led by Lazar Grosman and Lev Schindler was recorded between 1967 and 1975. On one hand, it doesn't accord with modern performance practices for Baroque music. On the other hand, these lush, relatively expansive performances are totally delightful. As the other reviewer notes, you really can't go wrong with this disc."
