"It's funny how some of the most unknown contributions to music can be some the best! The Baker Gurvitz Army is one of those exceptions. Featuring Ginger Baker on drums and vocals, Adrian Gurvitz on guitar and vocals and Paul Gurvitz on bass this cd is an overlooked masterpiece! Well written and played progressive, blues and hard rock make this cd a must for any fan of 70's super groups. All three of their releases are well worth the investment."

"Worth it just for the epic "Mad Jack" about a mythical race to Argungu."Kept his wheels, And he kept his head, Kept his tiger, black, white and red."It starts out pretty standard with verse/chorus/verse of kickin' hard rock. Then Ginger Baker gets on the mic with his (mock?) cockney accent telling a gripping story against a building background of keyboards and drums. By the end of the eight minutes, you almost are rooting for Mad Jack to win the race.The rest of the album is interesting too, with blues and progressive rock thrown together in a mix that any Cream or '70's rock fan will appreciate."

"I've been a fan of the Gurvitz brothers since The Gun days. This was their first venture with Ginger Baker and I thought it would be a winning combination. I wasn't disappointed, for the most part.



As one other reviewer said, this album has to grow on you, and it has since I bought it 30 odd years ago. I haven't played it much over the years, but when I dragged it out and burned it to CD, I recognized every song and they each brought back the odd memory: driving down the road in Spain near my house, the rib house on the way to Madrid, Segovia Castle. Obviously, most of the time I spent listening to it was in Spain.



The biggest hit from this album is also the shortest. Love Is is an instrumental that was used as a theme song by someone I can't remember. Too bad they weren't able to capitalize on it.



All of the songs are good, just that most of them are not breakouts (with the exception of Love Is), stuff that just soars above the standard rock genre. Nothing wrong with it, just that the songs, for the most part, are not super catchy, hence the four stars instead of five. This is still great rock and roll and I highly recommend it.
