Synopsis

Album Details
Badmarsh and Shri Are that Rarest of Dance Outfits--they're Actually Better Live Than on Wax. That Might Be Because DJ-PROGRAMMER Badmarsh and Instrumentalist Shri Bring Another Vocalist and Percussionist on the Road with Them, but It's More Likely that their Sound--an Exceedingly Organic Blend of Dance-floor Beats and Indian Sounds (Tabla, Flute)--really Comes Alive in a Club. None of that Should Imply that Dancing Drums is a Sterile Listen; Rather, the Enveloping Sounds, the Funky Bass Lines, and the Use of a Lot of Sound Loops Make the Album a Relaxing Experience--but One with a Beat, Too. Unlike Asian Dub Foundation, Another Group that Brings the Sounds and Rhythms of the Asian Subcontinent Into the Clubs, Badmarsh and Shri Aren't Out to Dazzle You--sometimes You Even Get the Feeling that They Think that Would Be Too Easy--but If You Listen Deeply, You'll Be Moved Just the Same.

CD Reviews

Incredible layering of wonderful sounds
Bergy | 11/01/2001
(5 out of 5 stars)

"This is exactly what i'm looking for in music. I have always loved the sound of the various South Asian percussion instruments that they use in this album, and have various CDs of Tabla and Raga music that I love for this reason. Additionally, I'm an electronica fan, with special interest in music with thick textures. This is that...excellent combination of natural sounds and layering that you can feel. They have a unique take on the South Asian style of vocal percussion (something that has always fascinated me) in 130 steps. If you like drum and bass this is an excellent interesting outpocketing of the genre. Perhaps what I like best about this is that the music is much more original and textured than the other forms of "Asian Underground", techno layered on Asian sounds, usually South Asian and Indian."
