Great band rising...
Bete Noire | Vancouver, Canada | 02/02/2006
(4 out of 5 stars)

"This was one of Doug Aldrich's amazing nineties bands, pursuing a type of rock combining influences from Whitesnake, Badlands, and Led Zeppelin into an excellent and dynamic style, which made them legends in Japan. All the songs are great on this compilation spanning all the albums in the band's short lived career. Serious collectors owe it to themselves to get this overlooked introduction to the band."

"After the band Lion broke up at the tail end of the 1980's, vocalist Kal Swan and guitarist Doug Aldrich launched a new band called Bad Moon Rising. Bad Moon Rising's sound was similar to Lion's but over the course of their three studio albums their sound became heavier and somewhat less melodic. They didn't try to go grunge or anything, they just rock a little harder and the songs seemed a bit more serious towards the end. All three Bad Moon Rising albums (plus a few extras) are collected here in the deluxe 3-disc Full Moon Collection.

Disc 1 contains the full 1991 self-titled album, including the bonus tracks "One Night in Tokyo" and "Alter Ego" from the Full Moon Fever single. This was probably the best Bad Moon Rising album for Lion fans, and it featured an impressive array of guest musicians, including Ken Mary, James Christian and Chuck Wright (House of Lords), Kelly Hansen (Hurricane), and Robin McAuley and Michael Schenker (MSG).

Disc 2 contains the full 1993 album Blood, which was the halfway point between the melodic rock of Bad Moon Rising and the straight-ahead angry hard rock of Opium for the Masses. It also includes the bonus tracks "Sweet Satisfaction" and "Can't Wait until Tomorrow" from the Blood on the Streets single. House of Lords alum Ken Mary and Chuck Wright lend a hand on this album as well.

Disc 3 contains the full 1995 Opium for the Masses album. This was a much heavier, far less melodic album than its predecessors, and one that came uncomfortably close to the grunge rock sound for my taste. The bonus tracks - "Rivers Run Red", "Underground" and "Crown of Roses" - come from the French exclusive Junkyard Haze EP.

If you're an 80's rock fan, particularly of bands like Lion and Hurricane, you'll want to check out what the Japanese knew from the start - that Bad Moon Rising was a band worth following. It may seem a bit pricey, but the Full Moon Collection is actually the easiest, most affordable way to get the full Bad Moon Rising catalog in one shot.

NOTE: There's nothing on the packaging or in the liner notes to indicate that these albums have been digitally remastered, but I suspect that's the case. They all sound clearer and cleaner than the originals and have a consistent sound quality from disc to disc, which was not the case with the original releases."
