"Bach: Six Keyboard Sonatas, Op. 17

J C Bach was the youngest son of J S Bach, after the death of his father he spent some time in Hamburg studying with his older brother, C P E Bach, and some time in Italy before settling in London. His early years there were very successful, both with his operas and later with a series of concerts with his friend C F Abel.

These 6 sonatas, first published in 1774, were written for harpsichord or fortepiano, J S Bach was foremost in championing the early piano in London. Known as the London Bach, his friendship with and influence on the Boy Mozart is well known.

This performance by the rising pianist Alberto Nose is, as now expected, on a modern Steinway. The music, though simple, is elegant and melodic, entertaining, and it flows nicely. The performance is confident and capable, delightfully light fingered. The sound is excellent, the cover notes good.

Although there is a plethora of keyboard sonatas of the period by C P E Bach and Haydn, and a little earlier by the keyboard king Scarlatti, these are well worth a listen, especially at less than $6 through Amazon.

Recommended."
