CD Reviews

Incredible reading of Bach's Orgelbuchlein (most of it anywa
C. B. Chappell | Raleigh, NC | 06/07/2006
(5 out of 5 stars)

"This is a magnificent cd of Bach's Orgelbuchlein BWV 599-631 (the rest can be found on Vol. 4). Weinberger really knows his stuff! His style is quite serious, but I love him all the more for that. The Wagner organ at Nidaros Cathedral in Trondheim, Norway is one of the greatest organs in the world, IMO. It has quite a heavy, distinct pedal division for an organ of it's size, and is perfect for playing choral preludes with cantus firmus in the pedal. The sound is otherworldly and majestic. He slows down many of these pieces, and spreads them out horizontally, and it works SO well. BWV 602, 603, 610, 612, 615, 617, 622, 625...are some of my favorites on this disc, but I really love every single one. I have played this cd so many times it's not funny. His severe reading of Jesu Meine Freude gives me goosebumps, it's so stark and to the point. Right into your psyche he goes. The pedals in that piece are especially haunting."
A good Bach Complete Organ Works
Antonio Ronchi | 11/19/2007
(4 out of 5 stars)

"This CD features the first part of Orgelbuchlein on the Wagner organ of Trondheim Cathedral. This large organ is one of the best preserved Wagner organ and was well restored by Jurgen Ahrendt. These little format pieces, simples but melodiouses, are performed with the usual skill by Weinberger who is very inventive with registration options but sometimes add ornamentations that alter the melodic line."
