Teeny tiny toccatas, itty-bitty fugues and puny preludes? Hardly. Some of these pieces are indeed merely "chips" off the master's workbench, but at nearly 14 minutes the Pastorale in F hardly qualifies as a miniature, nor does the Fantasia in A minor, BWV 561 (eight and half minutes), the Toccata in E, BWV 566 (over 10 minutes), or the comparatively brief (seven minutes) but contrapuntally vast six-part Ricercare from The Musical Offering, which really isn't organ music at all but who cares? These two discs gather all the organ works that don't fit into any particular category, and Christopher Herrick has assembled them in such a way as to provide for maximum variety and excellent contrast. A beautiful recital for both sampling and concentrated listening. --David Hurwitz

"Herrick plays the richly sonorous Metzler Organ of the Stadtkirche, Rheinfelden in Switzerland with performances throughout that are clear, articulate, and engaging--qualities that help make this an outstanding CD."
