Like comic Rodney Dangerfield, Bach's Christmas Oratorio "don't get no respect," because much of it is cobbled together from other works. But it's a wonderful piece, or pieces, since it comprises six cantatas intended for performance on different days during the Christmas season. As befits its seasonal concerns, the work is full of exultant joy as well as warm tenderness, fully conveyed on this exemplary set. A quick listen to the thundering tympani and biting brass of the opening will hook you on a spirited, irresistible performance, brimming with vitality. The RIAS Kammerchor sings with polished beauty, the "original instruments" band avoids the nasal whining that often infects such groups and contributes some superb solo turns, and the vocalists are uniformly excellent. Scholl's "Bereite dich" and other solo contributions are fine enough to make you forget a possible preference for the sound of a female alto. But the real hero of the set is Jacobs, who drives a performance as good as any in the catalogue. --Dan Davis

CD Reviews

The most joyful, beautiful Weihnachtsoratorium!
Gerardo Cabrera Munoz | México | 12/05/1999
(5 out of 5 stars)

"I can't stop marveling at the talent of former countertenor turned conductor Rene Jacobs. He has become truly a sensational musician! His Christmas Oratorio stands out for it's sheer energy and charisma. What a lovely recording this is! Of course, much of the Christmas Oratorio rests on the vocal quartet, and here Jacobs gathered a superb team headed by the gorgeous soprano Dorothea Roschmann, whose voice is really angelic. Countertenor Andreas Scholl has a terrific voice, even in quality and very pleasing. Tenor Werner Gura is most likeable too. The marvelous RIAS Chorus and the splendid Berlin Akademie are all a delight. The sound is up to Harmonia Mundi's usual high standards, so this set is a MUST!"
Marvelous, marvelous recording!

"At the very start the joyful timpani and natural trumpets announce the Birth of Christ, and what marvelous music follows! This performance is very, very good. The orchestra and chorus are a joy to hear and the soloists are outstanding. I especially liked tenor Werner Gura, whose voice is sweet and diction exemplary. Andreas Scholl and Dorothea Roschmann are also notable. If you want a Christmas alternative to Messiah, this is it!"
