Fire in the Konzertsalle!
Giordano Bruno | Wherever I am, I am. | 10/16/2007
(5 out of 5 stars)

"I first heard Belder's performance of the Concerto for 3 Harpsichords in C minor on one of the disks of the huge boxed set of Bach's Complete Works produced by Brilliant Classics. It instantly replaced, nay displaced from my memory, all previous interpretations of that audacious and phantasmagorical piece of music. Others have performed the multi-keyboard concerti with authenticity and even virtuosity; Belder adds passion and resonance to those virtues. The passion comes chiefly from his very intense tempi. The resonance, I believe, comes from recording artifice -- close miking of the harpsichords, perhaps. In any case, it serves the listener well, balancing the keyboards with the strings more effectively than is usually the case in live performances. If you don't already own the Gesamtwerk 155 CD box, by all means order this 2 CD performance immediately!"
I agree!

"I don't have much to add to Mr. Bruno's review; in fact I write these words only in case somebody browses my reviews, like I was browsing Bruno's reviews when I came across this gem: Buy this item before it is too late. One comment only on "very intense" tempos. I feared the playing perhaps was too fast, but no, here is no feeling of playing Bach as fast as possible. The tempos come from joy of playing, it is pure fire and conviction."
