Choosing a set of Brandenburgs is both easy and difficult. There are so many recordings--and so many readily acceptable versions. Your choice will partly depend on your preference for instruments (period or modern), tempos, and sonics. This one falls into the category of better (often virtuosic) period instrument performances, complemented by vibrant digital sound, and sometimes hampered by tempos that border on being too fast. --David Vernier

CD Reviews

The best....so far!
W. Crone | Northern CA USA | 01/21/2001
(5 out of 5 stars)

"As one who considers Bach his soulmate I do not take Bach recordings lightly. I have gone through SEVERAL recordings of the Brandenburgs only to be disappointed in one way or another to such a degree that listening was not enjoyable. Well, this set is the best one I have heard so far. Every concerto is strong and the sound is great. My only complaint (and being that this is music, it is entirely subjective...don't forget) is that the pacing in one or two movements is a little faster than what I have grown to like...but hey, things change. Mvt. 2 from the first concerto is taken a bit fast for an adagio but that's my opinion. Also, the affettuoso from Concerto 5 is taken slightly more staccato than I like but it is played very beautifully and I am pleased with it overall. One more thing...at this price nothing else even comes close."
Good fast-paced period recording

"The Brandenburg concert presents a fine recording of an excellent performance on period instruments. Some reviews of this set have complained about the fast tempos, which I personally prefer. I would happy recommend this recording to anyone."
