Synopsis

Arno Babadjanyan (1921-1983), an Armenian, won the 1951 Stalin Prize for an atrocious Heroic Ballad. Some of the piano pieces on this disc, especially the Polyphonic Sonata, show him as a substantial composer and an excellent pianist. Elsewhere on the disc Babadjanyan plays some incredibly awful schlock cocktail jazz pieces with two guitars and percussion. Go figure. The program notes are translated into a bizarre pseudo-English and will tell you little. You get about half an hour of worthwhile material on this disc and must program carefully around the rest of it. Few will find the effort worthwhile. --Leslie Gerber
