Synopsis

Album Description
UK 'Best Of' for the highly original & pioneering British goth band who've inspired many of the current crop of punk/goth/metal bands including Marilyn Manson. This is the first time any of the tracks have appeared on CD & were compiled with the aid of lead vocalist Mark 'Max' Freeth. Highlights include the band's pre-Ausgang single 'I Am A Horse'/'My Hair', that was under the name Kabuki, along with all the key songs from their five year lifespan (1982-1987) including 'Weight', 'Vice Like A Grip', 'Hunt Ya Down', 'She Lacks Discipline', 'King-Hell' & the band's last A-side 'Turn-On Tonic'. 2001 release.

"This has become one of my absolute favorite cds. It took some grow on me, as it's quite off the wall. Ausgang were one of the best bands to come from the highly influential "Batcave era" of the early British Goth scene. Taking influences from classic punk bands like the Stooges as well as proto-goth bands like Joy Division and The Birthday Party, Ausgang created some seriously manic and downright psychotic sounds. The tribal drumming, screaming, yelping vocals, and almost medieval sounding post-punk guitar riffs are fairly typical of the Batcave sound (see Sex Beat, Sex Gang Children and Specimen among others), but Ausgang had a certain "something" that really set them apart. (the early Goth scene was extremely diverse to begin with)It's not all gloom and doom. There are plenty of dark, gothic themes, such as in "The Lady Is For Burning" (witch trials), but there is also a lot of tongue in cheek humour present. "My Hair" is a self-parody of the visually extreme Goth/Deathrocker look. "Hots For Christ" deals with fanatically religious women who get tarted up for church(?!) and God only knows what "I Am A Horse" is supposed to be about. But don't think these guys weren't for real. They had an incredibly impressive stage presence that would put most current bands to shame. There was a passion and a sense of creativity in their music that would be way over the heads of most Hot Topic kids. The music itself is like a darkened, tribalised post-punk rock/medieval deathabilly sound that I like to describe as The Birthday Party on helium. Definitely essential listening for anyone into Goth or Deathrock. May also appeal to punks and folks into experimental rock like the Velvet Underground."

"I watched Ausgang morph from Kabuki, they had some shared factors with Alien Sex Fiend in terms of theatrics. Yet they carried with them a slice of post punk anger and aggression that made them excellent live. It's great to see a definitive collection & I am sure that this will bring more fans not less. Shame that 'Is That Your Bat?' isn't on this DVD! Vinyl hounds seek it out

People wonder about the Batcave, almost making it a Cavern for Goth's counterculture. I marvel at the diversity of it all now, from The Virgin Prunes, oddly rocky, oddly compulsive, oddly odd, to Sex Gang Children, whose involvement with Ausgang is well known, to the kitschness of The Specimen. I love them all.

C'ept Ausgang were a little more than 'Goth'.

Thank you Mark (Max) thank you Paul(Cub)for the showmanship.

with love & affection Neonheart

"Imagine a combination of the voices of Iggy Pop, Ian Curtis and Birthday Party-era Nick Cave. Now imagine a combination of the music of the Stooges, Joy Division, Public Image Limited and Killing Joke. The result is Ausgang. With tribal drums, shrieking guitars and insane lyrics yelped and spat, Ausgang will either captivate you or drive you away."
