CD Reviews

Blast Off With The Astronauts!
Mike King | Taunton, MA United States | 08/15/2003
(4 out of 5 stars)

"The Astronauts hailed from Colorado, signed with RCA records in 1963, and consisted of Rich Fifield (lead guitar, vocals), Bob Demmon (guitar), Dennis Lindsey (rhythm guitar), Stormy Patterson (bass guitar) and Jim Gallagher (drums). This best of collection is composed of all surf and hot rod instrumentals, wisely avoiding any vocals. "Baja" was their biggest hit and never sounded better than it does here. "Hot-Doggin'" was their next single, and should have been a hit as well. It's a rarity, since it never appeared on any of their regular albums. "Surf Party" and "Ride The Wild Surf" are both title songs to beach movies. The latter song is one of their best, featuring a memorable melody and tasty brass backing. Their hot rod instrumentals are well represented by such songs as "Devil Driver's Themes" and "Chevy Scarfer." This import CD is, without a doubt, the best single-disc collection of the Astronauts."
