Ashtray Babyhead Get Their Kicks
Bryan Rawson | Phoenix, AZ | 11/17/2000
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Quick Question Time: Have you ever met anyone with a really stupid name that makes absolutely no sense, perhaps like Covy, or Whimsicalicia, or Mr. Trinkertrammertrodface, or Steven? Yes, well I have. And now so have you, with the introduction of Ashtray Babyhead! (Okay so now they're The Kicks, but pretend you don't know that or you forgot or something because otherwise it totally ruins the whole premise of this analogy, and who among you would wish for that?) So anyway, life is a funny thing, because just when you've written someone off for their strange appearance or the way they pick their teeth with other people's car keys and then wipe them on your couch, Life can throw you a monster curveball and be like, "Biznitch, listen up cuz this aint what you been judgin' it fo', dogg." (Yeah, I know, Life talks like he's a gangster, but don't worry..he's harmless and his switchblade is plastic.) However, getting to the point I'm pretty sure I had when I started this, Ashtray Babyhead is an amazing band. Perhaps, as the critics say, not quite ground-breaking, but who is these days, apart from those pretentious freaks that make up Radiohead? (Just kidding guys, I love you, party at my house this weekend!) What Ashtray serves up is a power pop rollercoaster, so from start to finish you're singing & rocking along, wondering how in the world these catchy tunes will ever leave your head. Well here's the deal, they won't. Unless you pay me to brainwash you of course, and my rates are high. So it looks like the only fix is to give in to this incredibly hook-filled, pop rockin' posse and spin the CD non-friggin'-stop. That's what I do, and doesn't everyone want to be like me? The answer is no. But should you buy this album and soon? The answer is a definite yes. Peace like a pie, kids, make me proud!"
