Youra Guller (1895-1980) made very few recordings, so this one (her last) is a special treasure. It's odd that she devoted so much of the session to Baroque music, but she does adapt these harpsichord works to the piano effectively, without romanticizing. The Liszt transcription of Bach organ music is a great transcription, performed here with amazing grandeur. The little Granados pieces are lovely, but the romantic highlight of the program is the Chopin ballade, a real lesson in building a musical structure. Very fine sound in the resonant Nimbus manner. The CD contains several items not included in the original LP release, but regrettably omits a couple of items from the LP. -- Leslie Gerber

A life distilled

"The fact that Youra Guller could have been overlooked in the 'Great Pianists of the Century' series on the one hand, and is such an earth-shattering, life-changing phenomanon on the other makes this disc a thrilling discovery; a one-choice desert island disc (ideally I'd be allowed 2, and take the Cortot, Thibaud, Casals Archduke/Schubert Bb along as well..).I know this recording backwards; it's too moving for words."

"The Art of YOURA GULLER has become one of my favourite discs of all time. Why? its a trip to magic. I bought a cd sampler of nimbus a lot of years ago in england where a track of this recording was included ,GRANADOS to be specific. I was ecstatic by the perfomance. I felt floating into the sentiment of music. Its so difficult to describe the artistic flair of a genious. And Youra is not a virtuoso who plays to impress us only with her technical skills. She is here to unlock the emotions of our heart. God bless her wherever she is.
