Synopsis

Product Description
10 CD + 1 DVD SET

This boxed set consists of 1 DVD and 10 CD's comprising 212 tracks and 12 1/2 hours of playing time. They range in date from early 1934 to mid-October 1956, only three weeks before Tatum's death. Almost all of the material here had never been previously available on CD and most tracks had never been issued in any form. CD 10, newly issued here, comprises 23 tracks, of which 21 were previously unissued. None of the tracks in this box was recorded in a studio for ultimate sale to the public. With the exception of some recordings made for the US government, they are all live performances, from a wide variety of sources, including off-the-air radio broadcasts, the audio portion of his limited TV appearances, private parties, night club perfomances, after-hours clubs, transcriptions, recordings in private homes (including his own), and tracks from pressings made gratis for the Voice of America, and for the US Armed Forces during WWII

Art Tatum 10 CD's+ 1 DVD
Jaime Jaramillo | Miami, fl, USA | 01/12/2009
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Art Tatum is considered the top jazz pianist of all time and by many accounts the greatest pianist of all-time. The CD/DVD which contains 10 CD's and 1 DVD of very unusual material not recorded commercially and there are a lot, probably all radio dates, clubs, recordings for the AFRS, V-Discs, many of them unavalable elsewhere. It's gigantic effort, doubtless a historical set that I consider one of the best productions in jazz ever. Each CD contains dates, personnel, places and many tunes that Art never recorded commercially. Although the sound may not be the best in many instances, a thorough job was done to get the best out of sub-par recordings using state of the art recording techniques to improve sound and remove noise. The DVD, which contains several short clips of Tiny's exercise, the movie "The Dorsey Brothers" and the previously unavailable "Yesterdays" in video with Art in top form from the Spike Jones show. This DVD is worth a million bucks and the whole collection is a steal at that price and if you buy from Amazon check the other sellers and you can save a few bucks. The people from Storyville must be congratulated for this classic. I forgot to let you know that there is a book printed in fine paper with some historic pictures (like the one with Billy Holiday and Art) and accurate information for every recording provided by Arnold Laubicht and Ray Spencer. Do yourself a big favor: buy this item and you'll have one of the best collector's items ever.

"There is only one God and that is Tatum. Some of the CD's are poor in sound quality but one can overlook that when you hear him play! Many of these arrangements are very different from the studio recordings of Pablo, etc. and that's what make this collection "Superior" to the others.
