Fun old-time and bluegrass fiddlin' and twang
Joe Sixpack -- Slipcue.com | ...in Middle America | 12/30/2004
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Veteran bluegrass fiddler Art Stamper, most recently known for his work in the Ralph Stanley band, bangs out another fine solo album, with old-timers Harry Bickel and Doc Hamilton on banjo and guitar, respectively. Tim O'Brien (who's getting to be kind of an old-timer himself these days) pitches in on a trio of tunes, singing and playing guitar, and the net effect is one fine twangy little album. Stamper hearkens back to the good old days of pre-bluegrass hillbilly music, but he approaches the old-timey style with none of the stiffness and stuffiness that many of today's revivalists employ. He realizes that Charlie Poole and all them fellers from the Great Depression era were having a good old time playing their tunes, and Stamper does a nice job bringing that loose, lively feel back into the music. All of Stamper's records are fun, and this one's a winner as well. Recommended!"

This is such great stuff. The musicians are terrific. The tunes are fantastic. BUT..the thing that really gets me is the recording quality. It just sounds so good. Going to Boston is really good too. This one just has this amazing "right there in the room with 'em" sound. You gotta hear it to believe it and then you'll love it. And the other BONUS is that Tim O'brien sings and plays guitar on some of the cuts...and I gotta tell ya, I think the world of Tim."
Great Old Time Fiddle Playing on This CD

"When I heard this album It was so great. It had great old time fiddle playing. The day after this CD came out me and my dad had to play old time music at a square dance. I played fiddle and my dad played banjo. We played 3 tunes that were from this album. They were called Wake Up Darlin Corey, Moonshiner, and Possum up a Simmon Tree. This is a great CD."
