Art Farmer could play modal jazz !

(5 out of 5 stars)

"Don't miss this one. It was recorded in 1965 and you can feel all the atmosphere of this period : Remember Trane had been recording A Love Supreme, Transition, Sun Ship and Miles had been recording ESP and was touring in Europe with his great superlative second quintet. Why do I say this ? Because in the Art Farmer present album you can feel all the complexity, force, strength, tension, modal jazz with its hits you would encounter with the sax player or with the Sorcerer. I personnally range "Sing me softly of the Blues" next to A Love Supreme, Nefertiti, Transition, Sun Ship... It's modal music, it's great music. Mark my words !

Art Farmer plays the flugelhorn, Steve Kuhn is at the piano, Steve Swallow on double bass and Pete La Roca at the drums (the drummer who inspired Tony Williams among others signed a dramatic and terrible track, the wonderful "Tears", track 4)

An unknown masterpiece.
