CD Reviews

Long Live the Worms!
Fredrick L. Mcdonald | Bristol, WI USA | 03/18/2000
(5 out of 5 stars)

"As heard on Dr. Demento! The Arrogant Worms are a Canadian group that is finally starting to get some major recognition here in the United States. "Dirt" is their latest album (as of 17 March, 2000) as is one of the best to date. The Worms sing a fine blend of folk, rock, country, blues ... and several other styles that defy classification. They have a wonderful talent for harmonization and musical timing. But as great as they are musically, they really shine their best with their humour. From the story of the laziest railroad man to ever (sort of) lift a hammer to the tale of Johnny, who came home headless these songs are full of wonderful wordplay, odd situations and lyrics that are just plain funny! And you didn't even know that worms could sing, did you?Tracks On This CD: A Man Has Needs / Steel Drivin' Man / Great to be a Nerd / Celine Dion / Rocks and Trees / Gaelic Song / Wong's Chinese Buffet / I am Cow / Johnny Came Home Headless / Heimlich Maneuver / Scary Ned / Sponges / Log In To You / Winnebago (Special bonus track)"
Digging in the Dirt
J. C. Robinson | 09/23/2005
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Another really fine Worms album. The 'classics' on this one are Celine Dion, Rocks and Trees, and I am Cow, but just as good are the less familiar Gaelic Song, Johnny Came Home Headless and Steel Drivin' Man. They throw in the usual spot-on country&western song (is it Trevor who has the C&W fixation?) and round out the album with a wide variety of good, solid, funny songs. I'm always impressed how they manage to get the 'sound' right for whatever style song they're singing, from bluegrass to caribbean, and as always, the singing is tight and the harmonies are right. And the lyrics can make you snort drinks out your nose if you're not careful."
The Wonders of Canadian Humor

"This Canadian group travels around the country making fun of everyone and everything, and doing it in a manner that people enjoy! The Arrogant Worms are notorious for their sense of humor incorporated into their music. ?Dirt? is their sixth album that they have released and this album is as funny as ever, using even more Canadian Cliches to get their music across the country. They are still singing admirably after six albums and there are more on the way. This is great for people who enjoy the Arrogant Worms, (especially for everyone who knows about them). Throughout this CD they are trying to make everyone laugh, they have touched on many topics, from ?Men have Needs? to ?Great to be a Nerd?. The Arrogant Worms are very funny, and their music is so well suited to their voices. Just listening to the tune, you know you are listening to a comedy group rather than some famous pop group.
Chris, Mike and Trevor form this creative group that is singing their way to success. However, not in a traditional manner, they use their comedy and wit to allow some good laughter. Since you have to listen to the lyrics closely you will notice that even though the group is having fun and perhaps even making fun of themselves, you will notice that they really are talented too. Singing well and being hilarious it is a great combination. Their sixth album is ?Dirt? some of the songs on it are so fantastic, they are dealing with the serious issues of ?being in love with Celine Dion? and ?what a great place Canada is to live?, and how we have ?Rocks and Trees, and Water?. Their style is remarkable it gives the listener an opportunity to laugh at real life situations. The trio sings with straight faces, which adds to the hilarity. The beats change from song to song, incorporating very type and style of music from Country to Samba into their collection. Showing their audience that they are really more talented then they appear to be. The Arrogant Worms put their heart and soul into writing their own music, and then even more so as they sing on this CD.
?Dirt? is their sixth CD and it was very well done. The humor is great; the songs were catchy and had lots of energy. They are very good at getting people to believe that they really are kind of crazy and believe what they are singing! That is what every performer wants to convey to their audience. No one is denying that the Arrogant Worms are one of Canada?s best bands, and by far the funniest. The lighthearted sound and the variety of music and lyrics they use are entertaining. Even though ?Dirt? is not their best album yet, there are some songs on it that are better than the others. ? Men Have Needs? is about men, trying to get across to women that they have needs too. The fact that if they want to watch TV then they have every right to sit in their chair for as long as they wish to and they need to be able to do this without their women nagging them to get off their chairs. Their straight faces add a lot to the tone, even if you haven?t seen them in concert you can tell just by listening to them that they do act as though they are believing their lyrics and this adds a lot to the humor aspect on this particular CD.
I would recommend buying this CD. It has a variety of songs and musical styles on it and if you are willing to let yourself go, listing carefully you will enjoy this CD to the fullest. The Arrogant Worms, are a great band, however you have to be open-minded and be able to laugh at everything and even yourself. Cliches about Canada which if you are Canadian are hilarious and maybe even funnier if you are not. ?The Tree, and Rocks, and Water? song is first rate, making fun of Canada and saying that that is all we have to offer from this land of ours, it is very funny to listen to. This music lifts your spirits and can give you a really good laugh if you are feeling kind of down. Don?t forget to check out some of their albums, you might happen to find another one that is even better and more suited to your sense of humor."
