CD Reviews

NWOBHM band Aragorn

(3 out of 5 stars)

"Like countless others in the new wave of British heavy metal explosion in the late 70's and early 80's, Aragorn was a band that fell into obscurity. However, this is unfortunate.

In the early 80's they released a single entitled "Black Ice". Now, on the Aragorn antholgy CD, the story of the band seems to focus all it's hype into that particular song. Too bad because quite a few songs are pretty good iif not better than "Black Ice". Such as, "Noonday, Hellriser, a cool cover of Golden Earing's Radar Love, We'll Fight Back and Tickets on the Wall".

Aragorn's sound is a bit primitive, but if you are a nwobhm afficiando, I recommend this CD. Fans of bands such as Venom, Iron Maiden with Paul Di'Anno, Praying Mantis and Samson should enjoy the brash, British heavy metal that Aragorn offers. The lead guitarist is pretty good. He kind of reminds me of Mantas from Venom with a lot of whammy bar effects and distortion. Also, the speed of Aragorn's gutarist during some of the solos is liken to Kerry King of Slayer fame.

Aragorn's singer is no Bruce Dickinson, but his style fits the music well.

The bass player and the drummer, (there have been a few line-up changes with these players) keep it tight and bash out some impressive heavy beats.

All in all, I was not dissapointed when I got this album. If you are a fan of the new wave of british heavy metal movement from back in the day, I say buy this. The production of the cd is a bit raw but still comes across with a good, very listenable sound. It's all about the music anyway, right? Aragorn are for people who are into real heavy metal."
The only review that counts..

"Buy this cd! Why are you on this page in the first place? You are intrigued. It will satisfy every fiber of your being. The singer's voice is awesome. The songs are diverse and awesome. It sounds so fresh compared to what heavy metal has evolved into. This is classic metal with n.w.o.b.h.m's raw punk edge. You can feel there is no compromise to please anyone other than the band members themselves. I can't recommend it enough. It is a great cd."
