Synopsis

Album Description
Singer-songwriter/pianist Antony is one of those rare artists who, while not unprecedented, still emerges as singular. His is an an arresting vibrato and his presence is gender-anxious and confrontational in its vulnerability. His fey yet firm poise is quivering, tension fraught, but never engulfingly overwrought. Menored by Lou Reed, Boy George, Rufus Wainright and Devendra Barnhart, Antony presents a unique spectoral sound of faded, frayed glamour. This his second album I am a Bird Now is a polished gilded productions including a bluesy purr worthy of Nina Simone in "My Lady Story" and "Fistful of Love," with its Muscle Shoals horn blurts-meet-Weimar cabaret swoons via The Velvet Underground's shuffle. As a whole, I Am a Bird Now exhibits a downy affinity for androgynous eccentricity. Rough Trade. 2005.

CD Reviews

Best Album of his In My Opinion...

"I am a huge lover of music for such a long time and have used Amazon for at least 6 years, especially for the user's reviews of albums to help me decide whether or not I should but an album or artist, but after hundreds of music purchases I never left a written review, of course, until now. That is how much this album has impressed me.

I first heard Antony about 6 years ago in a movie penned by my favorite author Eddie Bunker (AKA Mr. Blue, READ "No Beast So Fierce") directed by Steve Buscemi called "Animal Factory", where Antony had a bit part singing a song at a prison talent show ("Rapture" from his first release). I was always moved by the song, but never motivated to follow through, until about 5 years later, where his voice still had left a haunting impression on me, and I did the research to find out who had that voice left singing in my head.

Again, I turned to Amazon for the reviews of listeners, where the jest of complaint goes towards his "vibrato", but I was still haunted, so I decided to start at the beginning bought the self-titled album, his first, which I enjoyed, though still on the fence on the "vibrato" factor, but blown away by the intesity and lyrics, so I was moved enough to buy this album... and then I was HOOKED!!!

Seriously, nothing short of spectacular.

If you have heard of his music and are wondering which album to buy or where to start, this is your album, then you become as obsessed and I have, and love that beautiful voice, as well as appreciate the long lost art of the EP the he has mastered, then onto the other projects that he has lent himself to like with Bjork, Hercules and Love Affair... even a cover of "I'm Knocking on Heaven's Door" on the "I'm Not There" Soundtrack.

If you have a soul, you will be possessed."

"I first saw Antony on a tribute to Leonard Cohen. His voice was so eerily beautiful that I couldn't forget the performance. I knew I would find what I needed to know at Amazon."
