Aside from the annoyance of what sounds like a creaking chair in the scherzo of the Fourth Symphony, these are exceptionally fine performances of two marvelous, neglected symphonies. This holds true especially of the Fifth, a landmark in 19th-century symphonic thought, and the piece that inspired Brahms when he came to write his Third Symphony in the same key.
