CD Reviews

A Triumphant Bruckner Cycle
J. Rich | 08/25/2009
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Riccardo Chailly is an excellent Bruckner conductor. Why? Because he understands the internal structure of the music and knows how to keep the ideas flowing, which is no easy task in Bruckner's music.

The interpretations are solid and Chailly is able to bring out the emotional depths of this music perhaps not heard before. The only other Bruckner conductor I can compare him to is Gunter Wand, who in my opinion, is the greatest Bruckner conductor and is certainly my favorite. Jochum doesn't make my list nor does Karajan. Chailly knows how to build the climax and sustain emotional interest throughout this set. The Berlin Radio Symphony and Royal Concertgebouw play with guts, fire, and passion. They have what takes to bring Bruckner's ever-expansive musical vision to fruition. The audio quality of this set is also superb, which makes this cycle even more attractive.

Anyone who likes Bruckner's music shouldn't be without Chailly's set. Outstanding playing from start to finish."
