All the ingredients are here: strong, evocative compositions; a pianist/leader who knows exactly what he's doing (and pulls it off with utter ease and panache); world-class musicians (esp. the unaccountably ignored Stephane Guillaume, whose brilliant discs #1 Soul Role and Intra Muros, have gone largely unheard in America; U.S. drum ace, Ari Hoenig; trumpet-master Markus Stockhausen [yes, he's the son]; and bass genius, Francois Moutin); and some major mojo that graces only the greatest jazz sessions. Throw in Michel Portal, French winds ace, for nearly a quarter of the listed time, and you've got an absolute classic session.



Here is jazz of huge presence and gravitas--something that comes along with maddening infrequency. But when it does, watch out: Your entire aesthetic's about to be rearranged.
